Four days until pub day. See you at BookPeople on Tuesday! I'm doing a book giveaway on Instagram today. Follow @beckycmurphy to see what I put up this afternoon. There will also be giveaways on the blog, Twitter and Facebook next week.
My friend Karen is coming into town tonight from Indianapolis just to visit and be here for my signing! It's been years since we've seen each other and she's one of my very best friends. Also one of the most joyful. Most joyful? Possibly. Joy is actually her middle name.
Now for airing out my dirty book laundry and show you what could have been.
For the content (the 100 drawings and 100 reasons), I worked with my editor and agent. For the cover, I primarily worked with Jaya, the Penguin art director. The above images are a few from after we decided on a sketch. I think I was trying to prove something and show off how many flourishes I could fit on a 6x6" piece of paper, even when it didn't match the interior of the book. Lucky Jaya had me simplify, simplify, simplify.
I was in Mexico when I did the above sketches. These are a few of many. The sketches aren't sexy, but at least they had a concept. On my first round, I had it in my had that I must do some sort of collage from the book for a border because there are so many full little details. I'm sure I was inspired by Mike Perry's book. I was stuck in a box, but again, Jaya gave me great direction and advised that I draw something that represents the book without needing to explain it with a caption. Ultimately we went with a typographic version (see last sketch) with a little lady under the T. It' simple and I love it.
Thanks for joining the fun! See you Monday with some other book behind-the-scenes.
